The ‘Heartbreaking Revelation’ That Made Princess Diana Cry ‘Ocean Of Tears’

Their marriage was famously tumultuous, but as things continued to disintegrate, one incident in particular with Prince Charles reportedly upset Princess Diana so much that she wound up crying “oceans of tears,” according to her former butler, Paul Burrell.

In a resurfaced interview with Italian TV show “Ricominciare” from 2008, Burrell revealed the moment it became clear to Diana that her marriage had officially reached the point of no return, stating that the future King of England even went as far as to indicate to her that she was simply a means to an end for what he had to do.

Burrell claimed that Charles told Diana he had “never loved her,” and that he had “just married her to have children,” and that the comment left her devastated. She “cried an ocean of tears,” afterward.

“She was trapped in a world that would not listen to her,” he said. “Her children were the most important people in her life and instead of being loved she reversed it by giving love. She would often say it’s far better to give than receive because there are no strings and I don’t know anyone as incredibly unique as the Princess.”

He also revealed that some of the anguish Diana felt over moments like that led to her exhibiting distressing behavior throughout her life.

“But on a daily basis I would have to dry her tears,” he added. “I don’t think she would mind me telling you about this—because this was the woman I knew, she had bulimia until the day she died.”

He also maintained at the time that despite popular speculation, Princess Diana did not take any lovers or have any extramarital affairs while she was still married to Prince Charles, and in fact waited until she knew her marriage was completely over, unlike Charles, who famously had an affair with his eventual second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

“She wanted to be told that she was beautiful and she wanted to be loved. She wanted someone to put their arms around her,” he said. “but to defend her memory I must say that she never took another lover until her marriage to Charles was over. This is important because she didn’t do anything until the marriage was over.”
