Heat, Cavaliers Fans: Relive Lebron James’ The Decision (VIDEO)
In the free agent summer of 2010, Lebron James went on ESPN to announce his move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat in a broadcast known as The Decision.
In this fall, this is very tough, in this fall I'm going to take my talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat... I feel like it's going to give me the best opportunity to win and to win for multiple years, and not only just to win in the regular season or just to win five games in a row or three games in a row, I want to be able to win championships. And I feel like I can compete down there, James said, a moment that NBA fans won't soon forget.
James' move ultimately affected the fate of two franchises. The Cavaliers went back to being at the bottom of the standings in the NBA.
The Heat formed a supposedly unstoppable trio with James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. However, the Heat fell short in the 2011 NBA Finals to the Dallas Mavericks.
In the NBA finals, James was a series-worst -36 in the +/- category. This means that the Heat overwhelmingly outscored the Mavericks if James was sitting on the bench, not a factor in the game.
In fact, James' worst performance was in the final Game 6, where he was -24 for that game alone. James also scored only 18 points in the combined fourth quarters of all six games.
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert took a shot at Lebron James in a twitter message following the Heats' defeat:
Congrats to Mark C.&entire Mavs org. Mavs NEVER stopped & now entire franchise gets rings. Old Lesson for all:There are NO SHORTCUTS. NONE.
The message, though congratulatory of the Mavericks, was an obvious message to James alluding to the fact that James left the Cavaliers organization for the Miami Heat last summer.
