Helen Mirren has nothing but love for her ex-boyfriend Liam Neeson.
Mirren, 77, got candid about her past romance with the "Taken" actor in a new AARP The Magazine cover story published Tuesday. They dated for five years in the 1980s.
During the interview, Mirren talked about her fondness for making clothes and admitted that she "went through a phase of making men's shirts." She said she designed shirts for all of her boyfriends, including Peter O'Toole and her husband, director Taylor Hackford.
The actress revealed that she also had one made for Neeson before looking back on their relationship.
"I did make one for Liam, oddly enough," she told the magazine. "We loved each other. We were not meant to be together in that way, but we loved each other very, very much. I love him deeply to this day. He's such an amazing guy."
Neeson and Mirren met on set while working on the 1981 film "Excalibur" and started dating shortly afterward. In 2018, years after their split, they reunited on "The Graham Norton Show," where they revisited their past romance.
The "Good Liar" actress shared during the sit-down that she considers herself "lucky" to have been with Neeson.
"We didn't date, we lived together for four years – we were a serious item for a while," said Mirren. "Lucky me!"
The "Run All Night" actor also revealed on the talk show how he learned that she had a crush on him when they were filming together.
"Before I met her and we worked together, I had read somewhere that if she fancied a guy, she would imitate his walk behind his back and I turned around one day and she was doing that to me," Neeson said.
Earlier this year, Neeson admitted that he fell in love with a woman in Australia while filming his movie "Blacklight." However, she was already taken.
"I loved Melbourne, I loved our Australian crew," Neeson said on the Australian morning show "Sunrise." "Every department was superb, but they were their own people, do you know what I mean?"
He added, "I made a couple of pals and fell in love once while I was there, but she was taken."
Neeson's confession was notable because he has not publicly dated since his wife, actress Natasha Richardson, passed away in 2009.
In 2014, Neeson spoke with Anderson Cooper about his late wife's sudden death. She died from bleeding on the brain after she fell and hit her head in a skiing accident in Quebec, Canada.
"She was on life support...I went in to her and I told her I loved her. I said, 'Sweetie, you're not coming back from this, you've banged your head,'" Neeson said. "She and I had made a pact, if any of us got into a vegetative state that we'd pull the plug. That was my immediate thought, 'Okay, these tubes have to go. She's gone.'"
Neeson and Richardson tied the knot in 1994 and welcomed two sons, Michael, 26, and Daniel, 25.
Mirren married Hackford in 1997. They have no children, but she's a stepmom to his two sons, Alexander, 43, and Rio, who passed away in April.
