President Joe Biden made history by becoming the first octogenarian to occupy the White House.
On Sunday, Biden celebrated his 80th birthday with a brunch hosted by his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, The Hill reported, citing White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
The first lady tweeted a photo showing Biden blowing the birthday candle of his coconut cake. The first couple was joined by their grandchildren, including Naomi, who married Peter Neal at the White House a day before the president's birthday.
The president spent his birthday calling the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
But his special day was also marked by violence when five people got killed in a deadly shooting incident at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado.
In a statement, Biden condemned the "devastating" attack and renewed calls to enact an assault weapons ban. He also stated that hate and violence against the LGBTQI+ community must not be tolerated.
Concerns about his age and health kept chasing Biden since he got elected president at age 77, becoming the oldest person to win the White House.
In an interview with CNN in 2020, then-Democratic candidate Biden pledged that he would be "totally transparent" about his health if elected president.
"Here's the deal. Anything can happen. I've become a great respecter of fate, a great respecter of fate. I've seen too much of it in my family related to accidents alone. I guarantee you, I will be totally transparent in terms of my health and all aspects of my health," Biden told CNN's Jake Tapper.
In November last year, physician to the president Kevin O'Connor examined Biden's health and insisted that he was still vigorous and "fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency."
In July, a poll by New York Times showed that 64% of those who plan to participate in the 2024 Democratic primary said they wanted the party to ditch Biden. A third of them cited Biden's age as the main reason they wanted to support other Democratic candidates.
Despite calls for him to serve only for one term, Biden said he intended to seek a second term in 2024.
In a news conference following the midterm elections, Biden said he would likely decide early next year whether he would run again for president.
Biden will be 82 years old in 2024 and will become the oldest president to be reelected should he win the next presidential election.
