Award shows are a great platform to create history and last night’s Golden Globes ceremony was no different. The award for Best Original Film Score went to composer Hildur Guðnadóttir for the movie “Joker” and in the process she became the first solo woman to win the prestigious trophy in that particular category.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 37-year-old composer became the first solo woman to win a Golden Globe in that category and second female composer to win the Best Original Film Score in 19 years. The first woman to nab the trophy was none other than Lisa Gerrard, who won the coveted trophy alongside Hans Zimmer for “Gladiator.”
Guðnadóttir faced stiff competition from fellow nominees that included Alexandre Desplat (“Little Women”), Rande Newman (“Marriage Story), Thomas Newman (“1917”) and Daniel Pemberton (“Motherless Brooklyn”).
While accepting her award, the composer thanked everyone who supported her throughout her life and especially Joaquin Phoenix, who made her job “really easy” because of his acting skills.
“Thank you Joaquin, for making my job really easy with that spectacular, unbelievable performance,” Guðnadóttir said.
Talking backstage, Variety reported that she thanked Todd Phillips for inviting her to the show and felt really grateful for such a wonderful year.
“It’s been a beautiful year,” she said of her work on “Chernobyl” and“Joker.” “It’s incredible to get both opportunities at the same time. Both projects were so different and incredible and so all-encompassing,” Guðnadóttir said.
Last year was a great one for the composer since she was part of two big projects. The composer also won a Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special last year for the HBO blockbuster series, “Chernobyl.” She was also adjudged Television Composer of the Year at the World Soundtrack Awards for the same TV series.
The composer is also up for a Critics’ Choice Award in the same category for “Joker” and is hoping to be a Grammy award-winning composer since she is in the list of composers fighting it out for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media award at the star-studded ceremony.
This was the second award for Phillips’ blockbuster hit “Joker.” Phoenix won Best Actor (Drama) for his menacing portrayal of the clown prince of Gotham. The movie has also become the most awarded comic book film in Golden Globes history.
