Kanye West helped give back to DMX's family in a big way.
Through his Yeezy brand, the "Gold Digger" rapper teamed up with Balenciaga to produce a tribute shirt in honor of DMX, who died on April 10. The $200 shirt sold out less than 24 hours after it was launched over the weekend, raising $1 million, which will go to the late rapper's family, Entertainment Tonight reported, citing an unnamed source.
A public memorial for DMX was also held Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and was opened by West and his iconic Sunday Service choir.
"Kanye went to NYC and produced an elaborate memorial service held for DMX on Saturday" where he "produced the entire service with his Yeezy creative force behind him," the insider said.
According to the insider, West "enlisted acclaimed visual artist Akeem Smith to create visuals and projections and collages used in the production." The "larger than life" projections brought the "Party Up" singer's images to life, the insider continued.
In a clip shared on Twitter from the memorial service, which was shown to the world via YouTube livestream, West and the members of the Sunday Service choir wore red hooded sweatshirts and huddled around a piano to sing a medley of songs, including, "Back to Life," "Keep on Movin'" and "Amen."
DMX's 15 children, Russell Simmons, Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and more also paid tribute to DMX during his homegoing celebration.
DMX's family honored him after he passed away, saying he was a "warrior who fought till the very end." In a statement, they highlighted the rapper's love for his family and thanked those who reached out to them after hearing about his death.
"He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl's music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever," the statement read in part. "We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time."
DMX's family also addressed the rumors that his master recordings have been sold, clarifying that "no one has bought Earl's masters." They also warned his fans of scammers who may be trying to profit in the wake of his death.
"We are not selling any merch or raising money for Earl’s funeral," DMX's family continued. "If anyone is requesting for money for his funeral please be aware the person is a scammer. We will keep the public posted on funeral/memorial service arrangements."
