Basketball legend Michael Jordan carved his name in the history books of the NBA during his nearly two decades long career. But the former athlete became a successful entrepreneur after that, and he even recently cashed in from football star Lionel Messi’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
With an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion as of Aug. 24, 2021, the six-time NBA champion and Finals MVP player is regarded by many fans as the NBA’s greatest player of all time. From his contracts alone, the basketball star earned a lucrative $90 million and received more than $1.8 billion from corporate partnerships with brands such as Nike, Hanes and Gatorade, as per Forbes.
After his success in the NBA as a player, Jordan turned to a number of business ventures and even became a NASCAR team co-owner late last year. One of his most recent successes has to do with him making more than $5 million from his partnership with PSG. The earnings came after the football club signed soccer icon Messi.
After Messi’s PSG shirt went on sale on the online store, the products immediately sold out within the first 30 minutes. Officials said that more than 830,000 jerseys were sold in the first 24 hours after the football player’s contract signing, Highsnobiety reported. PSG reportedly earned over $100 million in the first week since the jerseys were put up for sale.
The basketball star's Jordan Brand has partnered with PSG to manufacture the football club’s kit from the 2019-2020 season. The former Chicago Bulls player takes a 5% cut from all profits between the two parties. The club’s lineup includes high-profile players such as Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. PSG’s official jerseys and training attire feature the famous “Jumpman” logo of the basketball icon’s popular fashion line, Air Jordan.
Messi’s transfer to PSG took place after a failed attempt to stay with FC Barcelona. Considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of football, the athlete played for Barcelona for 21 years until he was forced to leave due to financial and structural obstacles, Times Now News reported. The initial two-year deal between PSG and Messi will pay the football star about $1.3 million every week.
