Here's What Disney's CEO Thinks About Martin Scorsese's Marvel Criticism
Disney CEO Bob Iger has joined the countless others in responding to famous auteur filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s criticisms of Marvel movies. After Scorsese went on record in an Empire Magazine interview as saying that he doesn’t believe Marvel movies are really cinema but more akin to “theme parks,” fans and creators of Marvel stood their ground to defend the superhero films.
Iger said in an interview with BBC Radio that “I think Martin Scorsese is a great filmmaker. I hope he hears this. I don't have a relationship with him, but it doesn't matter, I admire him immensely. I think he has made some great films.”
Iger went on to say: "I don't think he's ever seen a Marvel film... Anyone who has seen a Marvel film could not in all truth make that statement."
Many who have responded to the criticisms of Scorsese maintain that he’s a man of great talent, but that his statements made about the billion-dollar studio and their superhero movies are unwarranted. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iger argued that Marvel movies are, in fact, that: movies.
Just like the acclaimed films Scorsese makes, Marvel movies are backed by great talent. Marvel Studios has always employed highly talented writers, directors, cinematographers, actors, and crew to bring these comic book characters to the big screen. “They have a good two-hour experience. They come out feeling happy or better about themselves," Iger said.
Finishing off on the topic of Scorsese and Marvel movies, Iger diplomatically said that he was "looking forward to talking to him" over a glass of wine.
