KEY POINTS
- Jackie Chan has built a reported $400 million fortune in his nearly 60-year movie career
- The international movie star said he plans to donate the entirety of his wealth to charity
- His only son, Jaycee, is an actor and musician with an estimated net worth of $2 million
Jackie Chan has amassed a staggering fortune as an international movie star, but none of it will go to his son.
The Hong Kong-born star, now 67, has directed and starred in numerous hit movies in his six-decade-long career and continues to make movies today. It's no surprise that he is currently worth an estimated $400 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
However, rather than leave his money to his only son Jaycee, whom he shares with wife Joan Lin, Chan plans to donate the entirety of his wealth to charity when he passes away. He made this announcement during an awards ceremony held in Beijing in 2011.
“If he is capable, he can make his own money. If he is not, then he will just be wasting my money,” the actor, who had already willed half of his fortune to charity at the time, was quoted as saying by Channel News Asia.
In 2014, Jaycee, then 31, was arrested on drug-related charges after testing positive for marijuana and being found with more than 100 grams of the drug in his possession, Beijing police said in a statement at the time. He was jailed for six months.
His father, who was named an official “Narcotics Control Ambassador” by Chinese police in 2009, later apologized on his son’s behalf on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.
“I hope young people will take a lesson from Zuming (Jaycee) and stay away from drugs,” Chan wrote, according to China Daily. “I failed to be a good father and I deserve the blame. I will take the responsibility and apologize to [the] public on behalf of Jaycee.”
Chan's son, who is an actor and musician, currently has an estimated net worth of $2 million. Jaycee made his acting debut in the 2004 film, “The Twins Effect II,” before going on to appear in “Railroad Tigers,” “Mulan: Rise of a Warrior,” “Invisible Target” and “The Drummer,” among others.
In 2009, Jaycee won the best actor award at the Wine Country Film Festival. He is set to make his directorial debut this year with “Good Night Beijing,” in which his father will make a cameo appearance.
Meanwhile, Chan has an extensive filmography, with some of his most notable movies being “Police Story,” “Drunken Master” and “Rush Hour,” the last of which went on to become one of the actor’s highest-grossing films after earning more than $240 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The “Rush Hour” franchise, which also starred Chris Tucker, as a whole grossed around $850 million in total.
Chan's movies have collectively made more than $2.6 billion worldwide.
Chan was named by Forbes as one of the highest-earning celebrities in 2020 after making $40 million that year. Aside from his movie salary, part of his wealth comes from his endorsements deals, producer credits and his own line of movie theaters.
