KEY POINTS

  • Hilarie Burton said teen girl sexuality was a "cornerstone" of "One Tree Hill" but it was men who told the stories
  • The actress wants a "do-over" of the show with a "girl boss"
  • She, Sophia Bush and 16 other women accused "One Tree Hill" creator Mark Schwahn of sexual misconduct in 2019

Hilarie Burton is all for women in power. The actress has criticized "One Tree Hill" for having no "girl boss" and letting men tell the stories of "girl sexuality."

“Embarrassed by this. Teen girl sexuality was a cornerstone of #oth, so its (sic) gross to me that there were no women in positions of power there,” the actress, now 38, tweeted Wednesday.

“No one we could turn to to advocate for us. Men telling the stories of girl sexuality is a red flag. I want a do-over with a girl boss," she added.

She wrote the statement in response to a Twitter user who posted a photo of the actress and her former co-star Chad Michael Murray from the show, which aired from 2003 to 2012.

The photo was used for a page that read, “Adolescents are exposed to sex in many contexts, including TV and the Internet. Is it surprising, then, that adolescents are so curious about sex and tempted to experiment with sex?”

In 2019, Burton, Sophia Bush and 16 other women had accused "One Tree Hill" creator Mark Schwahn of sexual misconduct. But though the actresses were not on good terms with their series' original creator, the bond of Burton, Bush and their former co-star Bethany Joy Lenz continues to grow stronger.

"We’ve known each other for almost two decades now. Our friendships have changed immeasurably," Bush told Us Weekly.

"We’ve been through so many stages of life together. But I think something that we really cherish...Hilarie and I were talking about this not too long ago...is just having, interestingly enough, as we’ve all gotten older, having our friendships deepen even more," she added.

Bush said they went "through this wild ride together and it’s a thing that’s ours. No one else can really share it with us in the way that we can."

For her, it’s such a "special thing to leave a journey like that and maintain really deep and trusted connections and we all are able to support each other and inspire each other and it’s something I just really cherish."

While Burton exited the teen drama in 2009, Bush and Lenz continued to play their roles, Brooke Davis and Haley James Scott, respectively, until 2012.
