Hillary Clinton Tells Dax Shepard That Parenting Is 'The Hardest Job I Ever Had'

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton gave some valuable pieces of advice to Dax Shepard when it comes to raising kids.

On Monday’s episode of Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Clinton opened up about parenthood and what she has learned from it. She also explained to the comedian the intricacies of raising children.

“You want, obviously, the best, but you also want to try to be aware enough so that you don't make what you think were mistakes made with you, right? We all do it, though, there's no escaping from it. We are the products of our own parents' efforts to raise us," Clinton told Shepard, who admitted that he was afraid of committing mistakes in parenting.

The 73-year-old talked about her upbringing, revealing that her father had a “tough love” approach while her mother was more focused on education and supporting her “to be independent and outspoken.” Clinton added that the differences in how her parents raised her were advantageous.

“You know, the combination of you and their mom, brings different experiences, and aspirations for them, and kind of together it all works," Clinton told Shepard, who has two daughters with “Frozen” star Kristen Bell.

Shepard and Bell have been open about their struggles in parenting, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. Although Clinton has experience in raising her child Chelsea, she admitted that the journey is about “constantly trying to find the balance.”

Moreover, Clinton revealed that she doesn’t impose what she wants her child to become on Chelsea, but only tries her best “to enable her to become whoever she was going to be.” The former Secretary of State described this role as “the hardest job I ever had.”

Although parenting is a balancing act, Clinton said that this is also the boon of this journey. She explained that because Shepard and Bell still have 5- and 7-year-olds, things will still become more complicated.

“It's going to get more complicated. I actually think raising kids today in some ways is a lot harder than it was for my parents raising us,” Clinton told Shepard, who told the politician that he watched her documentary with his daughters.
