Three people were killed and several injured after a truck ran into a group of pedestrians crossing the Kamakee Street in Honolulu, Hawai Monday night around 6:20 p.m. local time (11:20 p.m. EST).

The suspected driver of the crash has been identified as Alins Sumang and is in a serious condition in hospital. He will be arrested after his release from the hospital on charges of negligent homicide. The Honolulu Police Department said he was intoxicated and speeding above limits when the crash happened.

After the crash, eight people including Sumang and the driver of the other truck he crashed into were taken to hospital. Police believe the victims of the crash are all locals even as they investigate if any visitor was hit.

Three people were killed at the scene; two of these were pedestrians and one was on a bicycle. Reports said first responders tried to perform CPR on one of the victims but did not succeed . Three other people were transported to hospital and while one of them was in serious condition, the other two injured were in critical condition. The victim’s ages ranged between 20 and 40 years.

According to a police statement, “A vehicle had fled the scene so officers were checking in the area. About five minutes later, reports of a vehicle speeding on Ala Moana Blvd. westbound, in and out of the traffic had taken place.” The vehicle veered across two lanes and crashed into pedestrians waiting to cross the street.

One of the witnesses of the crash said she saw one of the trucks “speeding really really fast and hitting the traffic pole. It kind of was like the movies, like everything was falling down. It looked like a hurricane… you could see all the debris just like falling down and it hit the truck.”

In the moments just before the crash, traffic cameras captured the scene of the accident and were able to picture the exact moment when the crash occurred.

Meanwhile, police have shut down all lanes of the Ala Moana Boulevard from 9:15 p.m. as it was an ongoing investigation and working with medical personnel at the scene of the crash. The police also issued a traffic alert telling drivers to slow down in the area.

“Please drive with caution in the Ala Moana Boulevard, Queen St, Kamakee St and Auahi St. area. Ala Moana Blvd, West bound traffic is closed at Queen St. All vehicles are being detoured onto Queen,” the alert said.
