Hotel Worker Makes A Duplicate Of Guest's Room Key And Attempts To Rape Her
A man who worked at a hotel in Missouri was fired from his job and arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a guest. The accused, who worked at the front desk, reportedly made a duplicate key to break into the woman’s room while she was asleep.
The incident occurred at Hotel Phillips in downtown Kansas City on Dec. 17, 2021. The woman was awakened from her sleep in the wee hours by a man attempting to rape her, according to the New York Post. The attacker was identified as 30-year-old Fletcher Clardy III.
On the evening of Dec. 16, the woman watched the Kansas City Chiefs game with her boss and two co-workers before they returned to their rooms at the hotel, according to her statements in a charging document. After doing some packing for her early flight the next morning, the victim went downstairs to the hotel bar at around 11:45 p.m.
Clardy, who also worked at the hotel’s front desk that day, was serving guests at the bar when the victim came for a few drinks, the criminal complaint said, according to the Kansas City Star. The woman returned to her room between 2 and 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 17 and told cops she locked the door before falling asleep. Between 4 and 4:30 a.m., the woman woke up horrified to find the man pulling off her pajamas whilst exposing himself.
“Get the f--k off of me! Who the hell are you?” she screamed at Clardy, according to her statement to the police. "Get away from me! Get the hell out of here!"
She also said her attacker responded by saying, “Sorry, I thought you wanted it,” before leaving her room.
The woman was able to recognize his voice and recalled that he was the employee at the front desk as well as at the bar. She then called her boss, who went to her room and found the victim “distraught, in tears and a mess,” the complaint said.
Once the police arrived at the scene, the hotel’s general manager and chief engineer assisted them with the investigation. Investigators acquired records of the hotel keys created that night and the times at which they were used. They found that a duplicate key for the victim’s hotel room was made at around 4:10 a.m., at which time the woman was inside her room. Surveillance footage also shows Clardy making the key and then getting into an elevator, the complaint said. Hotel records show that the duplicate key was used to open the woman’s hotel room.
Court records revealed that the employee was fired from the hotel on Dec. 30 and arrested on Dec. 31. He has been charged with first-degree attempted rape.
His Facebook account reportedly says Clardy studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and is also a husband.
