‘House Of Cards’ Season 5: Paul Sparks Opens Up About [Spoiler’s] Death
“House of Cards” Season 5 was definitely filled with a lot of shocking deaths, and one of them was the murder of author Tom Yates (Paul Sparks).
It was an unexpected twist to have First Lady Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) kill off her own guy, Tom, at the end of Season 5, but Yates was all for it.

He told TV Line that he did not know his character would be killed off before Season 5 started, since he was only told by co-showrunners Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese midway through the season. Surprisingly, Sparks did not take the character death hard. “I was OK with it. I’m a total slave to a good story. I’m down with a good death,” he laughingly said. “At the same time… it’s disappointing because [the cast and crew] are like family and you get used to being around them.”
Another character who might or might not be alive is LeAnn Harvey (Neve Campbell), the newest chief of staff of the Underwoods. She was shockingly run over by a car in Season 5, which makes her the most shortlived chief of staff in fictional history. However, even though the scene implied her death, many are suspecting she is still alive and will be back next season.
Following the car crash, her boss Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), even looks at the scene of the crime, then faces the camera. “Sometimes you don’t have to watch the whole movie to know how it ends,” he said as the camera pans to LeAnn’s wrecked car.
When Entertainment Weekly asked Campbell if she’ll be back next season, she was very evasive. “Well, I don’t think I can answer that question. I’m sorry,” she said. “Truly, I have no idea what their plans are. We get excited about the scripts every time they come in and we’re always sort of blindsided by things that occur in them. But I couldn’t tell you what the plan will be.”
“House of Cards” Season 5 premiered on May 30 on Netflix.
