A house cat in Syracuse helped three residents escape an apartment fire Saturday morning.

The residents were asleep when a fire broke out at 8:30 a.m. ET. Their house cat woke them up in time to evacuate, Syracuse Fire Department Deputy Chief Barry Lasky told Syracuse.com.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire was active, but they were able to control the fire and put it out within 20 minutes, he said.

The fire damage was contained to only the first floor of the two-floor apartment, but all residents will need to be displaced due to firefighters needing to turn off the power to the whole building.

Red Cross disaster relief teams will be assisting the residents with temporary housing.
