How To Block ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spoilers During Final Season
As much as fans want the world to stop while “Game of Thrones” airs, not everyone can be in front of their TV at 9 p.m. every Sunday through May 19. Anyone who can’t enjoy Season 8 live, however, should take precautions to block spoilers.
The most obvious choice is to just stay offline. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites are the easiest places to get spoiled. If you just can’t stop that internet addiction, however, there are a few programs that can help.
Google Chrome has several extensions that are helpful. Game of Spoils is designed for anyone avoiding “Game of Thrones” spoilers. It blocks out things based on a long list of keywords. Those who would prefer to come up with their own list of keywords or want something that’ll work for other shows too can try Spoiler Protection 2.0, which also works with Firefox.
If it’s just Twitter that can’t be avoided, try simply muting certain phrases. Obviously, use “Game of Thrones,” “GoT” and the show’s hashtags, but also consider using the names of characters (Jon Snow, Dany, The Night King) and places (Westeros, Winterfell). See Twitter for more information on how to mute words.
Tumblr addicts know that Tumblr Savior is the best way to avoid spoilers. The browser extension lets users block words with a “black list” but also lets certain posts come through based on the “white list,” should users make one.
Facebook users will want to use Social Fixer to filter out a list of keywords. It works with Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari.
If you really want to avoid spoilers, however, the best way to do it is to stay off social media. An extension like Work Mode might help fans who find themselves absentmindedly logging onto social media during a new “Game of Thrones” episode. The extension blocks all social media.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to stop co-workers from talking about it on a Monday morning. Ultimately, fans who want to experience “Game of Thrones” Season 8 with no spoilers should make every effort to watch live. Even west coast fans should tune into their HBO Go accounts at 6 p.m. PDT to make sure their east coast friends don’t spoil them. Check out all the ways to get an HBO subscription before Sunday night’s premiere.
“Game of Thrones” Season 8 premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
