How Brandy Channeled Mentor Whitney Houston At NFC Game [Watch]
Grammy award-winning songstress Brandy opened the NFC Championship game played by the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Brandy, who is is best known for her hits “The Boy Is Mine,” “I Wanna Be Down,” and “Put It Down,” dazzled fans with her own version of the national anthem at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Following her performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," fans and fellow artists praised the singer's abilities with former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland tweeting, “AMEN BRANDY!!!”
But Brandy's vocals are not the only thing receiving applause. The 42-year-old star also brought the house down with her outfit, which resembled her icon and long-time friend Whitney Houston’s 1991 Super Bowl performance look. As noted by People, Brandy's red, white, and black Prada tracksuit was all too similar to the late star's famous look.
Brandy has always spoken very candidly about the impact Houston had on her life. In a 2020 interview with People Magazine, Brandy noted that her childhood dream was to be a singer and to meet Houston. She recalled meeting Houston and getting the opportunity to act alongside her as the first Black princess in the 1997 TV musical "Cinderella." Houston played the fairy godmother while also serving behind the scenes as an executive producer.
Brandy's decision to seemingly honor her former co-star has not gone unnoticed by fans on social media. One fan posted a side-by-side photo of Brandy and Houston on Twitter, writing, “One thing about Brandy, she’s gonna always find a way to pay homage to her idol."
