How Jordan Peele's 'Candyman' Is Different Than The Original
Jordan Peele just dropped the trailer to his latest project -- another horror film, but this time it’s a retelling of a terrifying classic. “Candyman” was co-written and produced by Peele and was directed by “Little Woods” filmmaker Nia DaCosta.
The above trailer shows us the classic Candyman setup, the urban legend in which a group of people stare into a bathroom mirror and envokes Candyman’s name five times, supposedly causing him to appear with deadly consequences. It works, evidently, as a group of high school girls are then trapped in a bathroom, where they are murdered by the unseen entity while a girl trapped in a bathroom stall is left to witness it. A slower, ominous version of “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child plays over the footage.
The new “Candyman” reboot picks up almost 30 years after the original, according to Rolling Stone. Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) was the baby taken by the monstrous villain himself in the original movie who has returned to his old neighborhood with a mysterious agenda.
The original 1992 “Candyman” is considered a cult classic. It follows the story of Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) and Anthony’s mother, Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams). The film ends with the Candyman being defeated, but essentially trading places with Helen as the new urban legend.
Where Peele and DaCosta’s “Candyman” differs from the original is with one big plot detail. The protagonist, McCoy, is an artist and he moves into the original neighborhood to set up an art installation. The installation involves a mirror that “invites you to summon him.”
While the two “Candyman” sequels never brought back the Helen character, it’s unknown if the new film will address the original film in which her character takes over the killer role. The new trailer only showed quick images of the iconic hook weapon, but never once showed us the Candyman’s face. Although we do hear his ominous voice.
"I am the writing on the wall," it speaks, sounding like original Candyman actor Tony Todd.
Peele’s “Candyman” will hit theaters on June 12.
