She explained that when the body is busy metabolizing food, or digesting food, it does not focus on repairing cells or regenerating. She said that in order for you to receive the true benefits of fasting, the body would have to be in a fasted state for 3 days. More than 3 days is also good. She said it is only during after the fasting period that cells start to regenerate. Autophagy, the process by which the body would clear out damaged cells, is also triggered.
Fasting Mimicking Diets (FMD)
According to Pearson, the best kind of fasting is to go for the water-only fasting. However, it is quite understandable that not everyone may be able to sustain this kind of diet. Because of this limitation, Prof. Valter Longo developed Fasting Mimicking Diets.
Express’ report explained that FMD tricks the body into a fasted state while eating those “specially designed plant-based mini-meals.” This kind of diet is said to promote regeneration of the system and enhance cognitive performance. It also helps increase the life span.
Through FMD, participants of one study showed a significant reduction in total body fat, trunk fat, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Participants also showed lower blood sugar levels.
