The San Francisco 49ers are one victory away from winning their first title in 25 years, set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. Even though it’s been some time since the 49ers played with the Vince Lombardi Trophy on the line, they are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history.

Sunday marks San Francisco’s seventh Super Bowl appearance. The 49ers last won the NFC championship seven years ago when they came up short in Super Bowl XLVII. The Baltimore Ravens defeated San Francisco 34-31 on Feb. 3, 2013.

Prior to that contest, the 49ers had been undefeated in the Super Bowl. San Francisco won championships in the 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989 seasons. The 49ers won the 1995 Super Bowl for their fifth title.

If San Francisco beats Kansas City, they will tie the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl titles by any teams.

Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were the cornerstones of the team that dominated the 1980s. Montana won three Super Bowl MVP awards. Jerry Rice was the MVP of Super Bowl XXIII, catching 11 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in a 20-16 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

San Francisco beat Cincinnati 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI for the franchise’s first title. The 49ers were dominant in their other Super Bowl victories.

The 49ers capped off the 1984 season by defeating the Miami Dolphins 38-16 in Super Bowl XIX, beating Dan Marino in his only Super Bowl appearance. San Francisco defeated another legendary quarterback in Super Bowl XXIV, topping John Elway and the Denver Broncos 55-10 for a second consecutive title. The 49ers set the Super Bowl record for most points scored and margin of victory.

Steve Young was the Super Bowl XXIX MVP when the 49ers blew out the San Diego Chargers 49-26 in 1995.

Colin Kaepernick led San Francisco back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 18 years in the 2012 season. The 49ers had a chance to take the lead in the game’s final two minutes, but Baltimore’s goal-line stand secured the victory for the Ravens. A power outage forced the game to last four hours and 14 minutes, a Super Bowl record.

Jimmy Garoppolo is the fourth quarterback to lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl. He previously won two rings with the Patriots as Tom Brady’s backup.

San Francisco has made 20 playoff appearances in the Super Bowl era. The 49ers were defeated in nine NFC Championship Games, most recently losing in 2014 against the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco came up short three times in a four-year stretch, losing in the 1991, 1993 and 1994 NFC title games.

The 49ers reached the NFC Championship Game in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons. Prior to this season, San Francisco had missed the playoffs in five consecutive years.

The Dallas Cowboys have eliminated the 49ers from the playoffs five times. San Francisco is 4-4 against the New York Giants in the postseason.
