Three members of the royal family witnessed the final moments of King George VI’s life.

According to Express journalist Georgina Laud, on the night before Queen Elizabeth II’s dad passed away, King George bonded with his two grandchildren, Prince Charles, and Princess Anne.

And before King George headed to bed, he shared a meal with his youngest daughter, Princess Margaret. The next morning, one of the former King’s staff noticed that he didn’t get out of bed for his usual bath time.

Shortly after, they called a doctor, and the physician confirmed that King George passed away in his sleep due to coronary thrombosis. At the time of his death, the Queen wasn’t in London. She was in Kenya for a royal tour with Prince Philip.

As such, the monarch didn’t immediately learn about her dad’s death. In fact, it was the Duke of Edinburgh who shared the devastating news with her. Prince Philip also told his wife that she is now the Queen following her dad’s passing.

The Queen and Prince Philip stayed in a room to grieve the death of King George. The mom of four also stayed in a room for an entire hour by herself so that she could mourn her dad’s death.

Shortly after, Prince Philip and the Queen returned to London to attend King George’s funeral. One year after King George’s death, the Queen was crowned as the official head of the monarchy. Until today, she still serves as the Queen.

And by the looks of it, Her Majesty has no plans of retiring or abdicating from the throne. In fact, there are some rumors suggesting that the only way for Prince Charles to take over the throne is if the Queen dies.

“Her mother lived to 101. The Queen is there for the long run…she could live for at least another 10 years,” royal expert Nick Bullen said on Yahoo’s “The Royal Box.”
