He had a spectacular wedding of his own in 2018 when he married Meghan Markle. However, his brother’s own royal affair in 2011 as he wed Kate Middleton was actually the reason that Prince Harry’s then-longtime girlfriend called off their own romance.

According to Angela Levin’s book, “Harry: Conversations with the Prince,” his on/off girlfriend at the time, Chelsy Davy, was in attendance at the 2011 nuptials, but despite being with her beau since 2004, she was put off on marrying him when she realized how much pomp and circumstance their relationship would contain.

“A friend [of the royal family] revealed that seeing the enormity and pomp of the day convinced Chelsy that she and Harry had been right to separate,” she wrote. “Although they had a lot in common, she clearly saw that because they came from such different worlds it could never have worked, especially as she valued her privacy and guarded it so carefully.”

The couple had already been split up ahead of the wedding, and witnessing everything led to the decision becoming a permanent one. Prince Harry went on to also date Cressida Bonas for a few years before he wound up meeting Markle in 2016.

Of course, their relationship wasn’t the only one that seemed tested by the wedding, as Prince William’s insistence that Princess Beatrice’s then-boyfriend, Dave Clark, not be invited to the nuptials led to a long-term clash between the royal cousin and Middleton. Since Clark had been excluded from the wedding, Beatrice reportedly had an “icy” relationship with her cousin-in-law, and things didn’t improve as she became relegated more to the sidelines and Middleton took on a more starring role within the family because of her elevated position.

“Royalty is all about pecking order, often in a cruelly blunt sense, and it is Kate who has all the toys and the position,” sources said in 2016. “Despite being the only young ‘blood princesses,’ Beatrice and Eugenie have been reduced to walk-on parts in Royal Family life. It particularly hurt when Kate did solo engagements with the Queen during the Diamond Jubilee. They felt snubbed.”

Things allegedly also became tense between Markle and Harry and Beatrice after they announced they were expecting their first child at Princess Eugenie’s wedding last October, and it’s been reported that to avoid them upstaging her at her own upcoming nuptials to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Beatrice doesn’t want to invite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to her wedding.

“Tension has been brewing between Harry and Meghan and the York girls for months now,” a source said. “Beatrice has confessed to friends that if she gets her way, they won’t be invited.”
