How Prince William’s Obsession With ‘Danger’ Almost Ruined Relationship With Prince Charles
Due to Prince Charles’ spot in the line of succession, he has a deep understanding of the pressure Prince William has faced. Their similar experiences reportedly put Charles in a compromising position after his son picked up a dangerous hobby.
Prince William is second in line to the Britsh throne, which means his safety is always a concern. When Charles learned William enjoyed riding on motorbikes, he wasn’t sure how to address the issue.
In the book, “William’s Princess: The Love Story That Will Change The Royal Family Forever,” Robert Jobson claimed the Prince of Wales debated whether he should talk to his son about the deadly consequences of riding on motorbikes.
“Prince Charles was torn between molly-coddling his son and opening him up to such danger by giving him his head,” the author wrote.
“He believes there is no point wrapping a young man in cotton wool, but William is no ordinary young man. His determination to shrug off danger, to almost kick out at those who are inclined to restrict him, is both a flaw and an attribute,” he added.
Despite Prince Charles’ concerns, William continued to ride on motorbikes. However, once he married Kate Middleton and she gave birth to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, he took a break from the beloved pastime.
“I’m a father of three, I have to tone it down. I miss the big trips, for me, biking was always about being with everybody else,” he previously said.
Although Prince William admitted he needed to think about his safety due to his children, royal photographer, James Whitaker noted that William’s dangerous obsession was ironic considering the cause of Princess Diana’s death.
“It is a strange thing. His mother was constantly fleeing from the paparazzi, who were on motorbikes. Now her son is using a motorbike for the same sort of reasons,” he previously told The Sun.
In 2019, Prince William reportedly began taking on more royal responsibilities. Despite concerns for his safety, chances are the Duke of Cambridge will no longer have the time to ride a motorbike.
