How Princess Diana Coped During The ‘Dark Ages’ Of Her, Prince Charles’ Marriage
Princess Diana struggled during the dark ages of her marriage to Prince Charles. But the late royal also managed to cope with the help of one of her loved ones.
While speaking with Express, royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith said that the Princess of Wales focused her attention on her eldest son, Prince William, during the early years of her marriage to Prince Charles.
“Diana and Charles found some happiness in their caring for William. Both Diana and Charles were determined to be more hands-on than their own parents had been, even with the presence of a nanny in the nursery suites in London and Gloucestershire,” she said.
Smith went on to say that Princess Diana took her role as a new mom very seriously. And on occasions where she would hear Prince William cry from the nursery, Princess Diana would rush down the hallway to check up on her son.
The royal biographer also said that Prince Charles exerted so much effort to build a wonderful relationship with Prince William. When the heir to the throne was much younger, he was unable to bond with Prince Philip. Prince Charles and the Duke of Edinburgh couldn’t be more different from one another.
As such, Prince Charles made a pact that he will have a relationship with his son. “Charles was eager to spend more time with William than Philip had with him, and he pitched in to bathe his son,” Smith said.
However, Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ attempts to set aside their issues didn’t last very long. Shortly after tying the knot in 1981, the royal couple decided to have a trial separation. Even though the decision must have hurt their young sons, the Prince and Princess of Wales knew that they couldn’t go on any longer.
Four years after their separation, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s divorce was finalized. And one year later, the latter passed away.
