Elton John recently made headlines after he released a series of tweets defending Meghan and Prince Harry. In his post, he reflected on his close friendship with Princess Diana. Despite his kind words about the late royal, the pair didn’t have a stable relationship

Due to their high profile lives, John and Diana reportedly argued throughout their friendship. However, one incident almost destroyed their relationship.

Princess Diana and John reportedly had a falling out over the release of his book, “Rock and Royalty” with Gianni Versace in 1997. The Princess of Wales refused to attend an event for the book when she learned photos of herself, Prince William and Prince Harry would appear alongside pictures of nude men.

Although she agreed to the use of her photos, she withdrew her consent and asked him to scrap 30,000 copies that were already printed. After he refused, their friendship began to fall apart.

In 2003, John’s feelings about the disagreement were published in the Daily Mirror. “I was upset when Diana pulled out of the launch party at the last moment, and I was concerned at the effect it would have on the credibility of the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” he explained.

“It was because of this that I wrote to her about how she had left the charity down,” John said.

Although Princess Diana fired back with a “strange letter,” her team reached out to John before the event. “Diana’s office rang him a week before the launch party in West London to say she wouldn’t be there,” the Daily Mirror reported.

“Elton, who had a close relationship with the princess, said he was disappointed that she didn’t ring him herself to explain and sort out the problem. He was bewildered, and thought her behavior was strange.”

Despite the disagreement, John revealed he was happy the two were able to reconcile. “It’s one of those things that friends sometimes do. You know, they are too proud to pick up the phone,” he explained.

“That’s how the whole row started, and I was relieved when we made it up just before Gianni’s death.”

Versace was murdered outside of his Miami home, six weeks before Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Years after Diana’s death, John continues to speak fondly of his late friend and the contributions she made to the world before her tragic end.
