How Princess Diana, Prince Charles Trashed Honeymoon Room After ‘Battle Royal’
Princess Diana and Prince Charles were already showing signs of marital discord after their wedding.
The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage was far from their fairytale wedding. According to Winston Churchill, the couple’s rocky relationship was already evident during their honeymoon. He recalled how Johnnie Spencer, Princess Diana’s father, invited them for lunch at Althorp because he wanted to show them the private apartments.
Churchill agreed and they had lunch. Then, Spencer offered to show them the guest room that he completely ordered to be redone for Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s return from their honeymoon. However, he warned them that “it’s a bit of shambles now.”
“And clearly there had been a battle royal: there were water stains on the green silk wallpaper; there was a Chippendale chair that was broken; there was a mirror cracked,” Churchill said of the place that the couple trashed.
“At the time, my wife and I put it down to a lovers’ tiff. But now, with the benefits of hindsight, one can see that the marital discord started right at the beginning.”
Churchill believed that the “battle royal” between Princess Diana and Prince Charles occurred after the heir apparent told his wife about his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. The announcement drove Princess Diana “ballistic” and from there everything went rapidly downhill as Princess Diana became sick.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles had an “unhappy” honeymoon. According to Penny Junor in her 2017 biography “The Duchess: The Untold Story,” she was offended that Prince Charles preferred to bury his head in his books rather than sit and talk to her.
In addition, Prince Charles was looking forward to swimming, reading, painting and writing thank you letters. The Prince of Wales’ plan for their honeymoon was a “snub” to his wife.
Prince Charles also hurt Princess Diana with a “stupid decision ” by not showing a huge emotional intelligence on their honeymoon when he wore the cufflinks that Camilla gave him. The cufflinks featured two C’s entwined that many believed represented the first letter of their names. To make matters worse, he also brought a picture of Camilla.
