Princess Diana once got fed up with the constant criticisms being thrown at her that’s why she decided to take matters in her own hands.

Years ago, she rebelled against the so-called “Grey Men,” who were watching her every move. During her conversation with her friend and confidante, Dr. James Colthurst, Princess Diana said that she was feeling particularly low as the “Grey Men” hit out at her once again.

Colthurst urged the Princess of Wales to show her defiance rather than put up with the constant criticism again. The advised pushed the mom of two to take the world by storm by wearing the so-called “revenge dress” at Vanity Fair’s 1994 Summer Party at the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park.

While speaking with Daily Mail, Colthurst also shared details about his conversation with Princess Diana.

“That day she was mightily fed up because she’d had criticisms from what she called the ‘Grey Men,’ I think to do with one of her successful speeches. She often felt she was doing her bit for The Firm, as she called it, and she wasn’t appreciated,” he said.

One day before Vanity Fair’s party, Princess Diana couldn’t believe the backlash she faced for her speech. Her reaction was more of an exasperation than a shock.

“So I told her, ‘You’ve got to show defiance; put something on that really swings the heads.’ In the end, she chose that dress,” Colthurst said.

However, royal author Andrew Morton had a different story on how Princess Diana ended up wearing her revenge dress. She told Daily Mail that the late royal was supposed to wear a dress designed by Valentino.

But even though her mind was set on it, staff from the luxury brand leaked details about the dress that she would wear to the party. The move made Princess Diana upset so she decided to wear something else and ended up with Christina Stambolian’s creation.
