How Princess Diana Turned Prince Charles Split Into A Personal Game
Although Princess Diana and Prince Charles waited until December 1992 to officially announce their separation, their marriage was falling apart both publicly and privately prior to their confirmation.
Diana and Charles, who shared sons Prince William and Prince Harry, initially brought their intentions to separate to Queen Elizabeth II during Christmas time in 1991. However, following a discussion, the unhappy couple agreed to give their relationship one last chance and put on a united front as they tried to work past their issues.
According to “The Diana Chronicles” by Tina Brown, the Princess of Wales agreed to hold off on the announcement, but it didn’t mean she planned on completely ignoring her issues with Prince Charles. “[Diana] had become as deft as a 1920s movie star sending silent messages,” Brown explained.
The author revealed Princess Diana didn’t miss an opportunity to take a discreet jab at her husband during their trip to India in February 1992. At one point, Charles tried to do some damage control in the press by showing his wife some affection, but Diana reportedly thwarted his attempt to publicly kiss her at the end of a polo match in Jaipur.
“She moved her head from side to side so he wound up chasing her lips around and kissing her just above her earring. Wrong-footing Charles had become her private-public parlour game,” Brown stated.
To continue to stir up chatter, Princess Diana visited the Taj Mahal without her husband and described her time as a “healing experience,” however, she refused to explain her comment further.
“Apprised of the information that Charles had once visited the Taj Mahal and said he would one day bring his wife there, she posed alone in front of the monument to marital love,” the author revealed.
Prince Charles finalized his divorce with Diana in 1996, a year later, the Princess of Wales died in a car crash in Paris.
