How The Royal Family Has ‘Muted’ Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle was once known for her outspoken and strong political views, but a royal expert says that she's since been “muted” by the royal family due to protocol.
On an episode of “Robert Jobson’s Royal Podcast,” the Evening Standard royal correspondent revealed that the one-time actress had to learn how to censor her opinions because of her new role in the family.
As quoted by Express UK, Jobson explained that as a rule, members of the royal family are not allowed to voice political opinions, something the Duchess of Sussex had to adapt to when she joined them.
“Perhaps the most important rule that has implications for the survival of the ancient and unelected institution is that the royal family is not allowed to vote, hold any type of political office or speak publicly about politics,” he said. “They must certainly not be seen to be supporting one political party above another as to do so could cause a constitutional crisis.”
Meanwhile, Markle was known to voice political opinions in the past—especially during the 2016 Presidential election, but she had to change her tune when she officially became Prince Harry’s fiancée in 2017.
“Such strident opinions would have to be muted as she embraces her life as a member of the royal family,” he said.
Markle’s outspoken nature got her into a little bit of trouble not long after her marriage took place after she got involved in a political discussion during the July 20 garden party at the British Ambassador’s residence in Dublin.
At the time she commented that she was “pleased to see the result” of Ireland’s recent referendum to legalize abortion. That comment was later exposed, and she learned the hard way that she had to watch what she said while outside of the inner circle.
