HP TouchPad Sale: Buyers Receive Free 50GB of Lifetime Cloud Storage

Not only do buyers who partake in the HP TouchPad sale, expected to continue this week, get a heavily discounted $99 tablet computer, but they also receive a free 50GB of lifetime cloud storage through Box.net.

Yes, for life, thanks to HP's partnership with cloud storage provider Box.net. 50GB of cloud storage on Box.net usually costs around $20 per month, making the HP TouchPad sale seem like the deal of the century.

While HP has not confirmed they will honor the free lifetime cloud storage account throughout the discontinued HP TouchPad sale, ZDNet users have confirmed that the deal is currently still being honored.

Box's CEO Aaron Levie told PCMag that they will continue to offer the free lifetime account to HP TouchPad users for the foreseeable future.

We're absolutely still offering 50GB of free cloud storage to all TouchPad owners, and not surprisingly, we've seen a significant spike in signups through the Box for TouchPad app in the past few days, bringing total app downloads to 30,000, Levie said to PCMag.

New HP TouchPad owners can sign up for their free 50GB Box.net cloud storage account through the App Catalog and it can be used and accessed through any web browser, on any device, anywhere.

The HP TouchPad sale began as large retailers requested to clear out stockpiled inventory, like Best Buy, which sold less than 10 percent of its inventory, according to PCMag.

The TouchPad sale also comes amidst a shift in plans for HP, which said on Thursday that it would discontinue all webOS-powered devices in an effort to optimize the value of webOS software going forward, according to an HP representative.

In response, HP ordered retailers in a memo to offer the TouchPad at a heavily discounted price of $99 for 16GB and $149 for 32GB, down from $500 and $600 when the models were released in July.

How to Snag an HP TouchPad

Don't feel bad if you've missed the first boat to acquire a $99 tablet computer, the HP TouchPad sale is expected to continue this week, according to the company's social media manager, who says a second wave of the fire sale will begin early in the week.

Bryna Corcoran tweeted that more HP TouchPads should be available this week though HP's Web site, as most large retailers declared to be out of stock.

According to Corcoran, the best way to try and get a TouchPad is to sign up for an alert to be notified when more are in stock. Consumers will be able to purchase the tablet at a discounted price of $99 for 16GB and $149 for 32GB, along with their free Box lifetime cloud storage account.
