HTC Flagships Will Get Android L 90 Days After Release
HTC Corp. (TPE: 2498) is continuing its effort to be transparent to consumers and has announced that it will update its flagship handsets such as the HTC One M8 and the HTC One M7 to Android L update within 90 days of receiving the final system software from Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).
The upcoming operating system Android L was previewed at the Google I/O conference on Wednesday and will release in the fall. Currently, HTC is the only manufacturer to confirm plans for its Android L implementation.
HTC has previously laid out the details of how it prepares an Android update for its devices, which is a five-stage process that includes evaluation, development, integration, test/certification, and push to customer. HTC regularly adds new information to its software update page so customers know when new software is close to a rollout. In February, the manufacturer announced its HTC Advantage promise to keep its most recent products regularly updated with the latest software.
The Android L is being called the “most dramatic” user interface overall since the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which released in 2011. Some prime features include a new user interface called “Material Design” (inspired by the look of paper and ink), enhanced notifications (which pop-up above functioning applications), and updated recents section (including recently viewed Chrome web pages in addition to recently used applications) and improved battery life with “Project Volta” optimization.
