  • A fan-made remake of "Goldeneye 007" maps for "Far Cry 5" was taken down
  • Ubisoft said "Goldeneye's" rights holder filed a copyright claim against the remake
  • The project was in the making for over three years

Ubisoft took down a large fan-made project in “Far Cry 5” over a copyright claim from a third party, effectively wiping nearly 1,400 hours’ worth of progress.

The project in question is a remake of all “Goldeneye 007” maps using “Far Cry 5’s” level editor. User Krollywood made very accurate, reimagined maps from the classic FPS game using only assets found in “Far Cry 5.” Krollywood successfully recreated every “Goldeneye” map but his success was cut short after Ubisoft took all of them down, Kotaku reported.

The recreated “Goldeneye” maps were extremely faithful to their original counterparts. Krollywood was able to use “Far Cry’s” limited assets to remake all of the levels in a playable state in the game’s Arcade mode, which serves as a hub for community members to create and share their own content.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft was forced to take down this massive project after receiving a copyright infringement claim from an unspecified rights holder. One Ubisoft representative told Kotaku that Krollywood violated “Far Cry 5’s” terms of use, citing the copyright claim as the main issue.

Although Ubisoft didn’t mention who launched the copyright claim, “Goldeneye’s” owner can be traced back to MGM, the film studio that partially owns the “James Bond” series and the owner of “Goldeneye’s” license.

In a short email exchange, Krollywood told Kotaku that he was sad for the fans of the “Goldeneye” map rework project because no one will be able to enjoy it. Years of hype ultimately resulted in disappointment for many fans of the old N64 game, and it seems like every attempt at a modern “Goldeneye” revival is doomed to receive the same kind of treatment.

Krollywood also mentioned that he will most likely not be able to do anything about the project anymore now that the rights holder knows about him. He started remaking the maps three years ago as a personal project for himself and his best friend, both avid “Goldeneye” fans. Krollywood decided to remake all of the maps for the rest of the game’s fans worldwide, releasing teasers of the project over his YouTube channel.
