Hummer EV: GM 'Supertruck', Priced At $112,595, To Reach Markets In 2021
KEY POINTS
- GM Hummer EV is a "first zero-emission" electric truck
- It has a range of over 350 miles with a full charge
- From 2022, cheaper models ranging from $79,995 to $99,995 will be released
General Motors is bringing back the Hummer name, but this time, as an electric "supertruck". The automaker unveiled its new electric 2022 GMC Hummer EV on Tuesday night.
The Hummer range was mainly off-road SUVs and trucks that were phased out by the company a decade ago, as it drew flak for burning a lot of gas. The brand has now been revived in this all-electric model, with better on-road and off-road handling, the automaker said.
The first Hummer EV Edition 1, unveiled almost a year after EV market leader Tesla’s Cybertruck debut, will be available in the fall of 2021 and will be priced at $112,595. It is what GM is calling the "first zero-emission" electric truck.
GM boasts of a powerful engine in the first model, with three electric motors capable of producing 1,000 horsepower (hp) and a four-wheel drive, which enables the car to be driven diagonally. The truck can go from zero to 60 miles in three seconds because of its powerful engine. It has a driving range of over 350 miles.
Aside from power components, GM has enabled hands-free features on this premiere model. The vehicle has removable panels in its roof and a back window that can be detached for an open-air truck experience. Its advanced air suspension system enables the truck to rise as much as six inches, for a better off-roading drive. There are video cameras providing a view around the car from 18 different points.
In the coming years, the company will put out cheaper models onto the market, albeit with fewer features. In the fall of 2022, the Hummer EV3X will be launched, priced at $99,995. This model will also have three motors, but a less powerful engine producing 800 hp and a 300+ mile range. In the spring of 2023, Hummer EV2X will hit the market at $89,995, with only two motors -- a similar range to the previous models -- but an engine with 625 hp. The Hummer EV2 will be available in the spring of 2024 with a 250+ mile range and a 625 hp engine, priced at $79,995.
The company made the first car in its Hummer EV series a pickup truck instead of an SUV because that is what GMC is best known for, Duncan Aldred, head of GM’s Buick and GMC brands, was quoted by CNN. GMC is a division of General Motors that primarily focuses on trucks and utility vehicles.
GMC Hummer is entering the promising electric truck market -- estimated at $422.5 million in 2019 and anticipated to hit $1.89 billion by 2027. It will compete with Nikola's electric trucks, Lordstown Motors’ recently launched Endurance, Rivian’s R1T, Bollinger B2 and Ford’s F-150.
