Humor ruled the roost at Webby Awards
Webby awards, often regarded as the internet's version of Oscars, was filled with humor, satire and glitterati. Now that comes as no surprise with the famous sitcom Friends' star Lisa Kudrow hosting the show.
Many people including Peter Vesterback, creator of the addictive game Angry Birds and Martin Cooper, inventor of mobile phone, were awarded with webby. The webby is for the best of internet industry including websites, interactive advertising, online film and mobile applications.
Sometimes, geeks can be chic, Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said on Monday after actor Daniel Radcliffe presented her with a Webby for best fashion website, said a report quoting AFP.
IBM computer Watson, was named person of the year at the 15th annual Webby Awards. Watson was renowned for defeating television game show Jeopardy's top human players. On receiving a Webby from the host Lisa Kudrow, a computerized voice bolted out the words, Person of the year, ironic.
That was clever, Kudrow retorted. You're quite the word processor.
On a more serious note, awards also paid tribute to Egyptian protesters who used Twitter and Facebook to overthrow Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.
Injustice, oppression, social media equals revolution, Mohamed Diab, an Egyptian filmmaker said while accepting a webby.
