Hunter Biden's Art 'Opens Gateway To Massive Corruption,' Schweizer Says
KEY POINTS
- A 2020 Senate report found a connection between art dealings and money laundering schemes
- Author Peter Schweizer calls for an independent party to review who paid Hunter Biden for his artwork
- A former ethics chief previously called Hunter's artwork sale a "mechanism for funneling bribes"
American writer Peter Schweizer on Sunday called Hunter Biden’s artwork sales a “gateway to massive corruption” and slammed the White House’s anonymous art sale arrangement.
During an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, the “Secret Empires” author called the younger Biden’s artwork sale an “ingenious” plan and argued that the arrangement, which allows the art dealer to keep the identities of Hunter’s art buyers anonymous, could lead to massive corruption.
“Art is different than the business world. It’s entirely subjective. So somebody’s prepared to spend half a million dollars for a piece of art. Who can question it? So, in that sense, it’s very genius, but this opens the gateway to massive corruption,” Schweizer said.
The American author also referenced an August 2020 report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) suggesting a connection between high-end art and money laundering schemes.
The committee’s report mentioned the case of Arkady and Boris Rotenberg, Russian oligarchs who purchased over $18 million worth of art in transactions to evade U.S. sanctions.
“[The White House’s] solution of transparency is to actually hide who is engaged with the transaction. It’s ludicrous,” Schweizer added. “I don’t think Hunter Biden should be doing this to begin with. But if he’s going to do it, they need to disclose and have an independent party verify who is actually paying him for this artwork.”
The American author’s remarks come after Walter Shaub, an ethics chief for former President Barack Obama, called Hunter’s artwork sale arrangement a “mechanism for funneling bribes” in a statement to Fox News.
"Even if you happen to trust Joe Biden, what if the next president has the character of a Donald Trump? This would be a perfect mechanism for funneling bribes to that president,” he had said.
Schweizer’s comments also come after former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, on Wednesday claimed they found evidence suggesting that President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden "were directly benefitting from their son’s foreign dealings."
The former Utah congressman also claimed that he and Schweizer have found the evidence in a laptop believed to have been left by the younger Biden at a computer repair shop in Delaware.
