Kathleen Buhle, the ex-wife of Hunter Biden, detailed the First Son's alcoholism and infidelity she suffered through their 24-year marriage in a new book published Tuesday.
In her memoir “If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing,” Buhle said the younger Biden was “mature and charming” during the early days of their marriage, adding that she felt loved by her husband. However, Buhle said she first noticed Hunter’s habit of drinking in 2001, shortly after the birth of their second child. At the time, Biden had just taken a job as a partner at a lobbying firm based in Washington, D.C.
“I watched his drinking spiral from social to problematic,” Buhle wrote, according to Vanity Fair’s excerpt of the book. “Watching how much he could consume scared me…For the first time, I didn’t trust my husband.”
When Biden first entered rehab in 2003, Buhle said she felt their marriage had become “stronger than ever.” However, Biden relapsed after seven years of sobriety, forcing Buhle to become a sobriety detective.
“As my suspicions grew, so did Hunter’s defensiveness,” she said. “He made me think that I must be crazy, when what I wanted from him was honesty. But I didn’t know how to ask for it.”
Buhle, who divorced Biden in 2017, said she learned of her husband’s affair with Hallie Biden from her daughters who discovered text messages on their father’s phone. Hallie is the widow of Hunter’s late brother, Beau, who died of brain cancer in May 2015.
"I felt a strange vindication," Buhle wrote, according to an excerpt obtained by People.
"Not only had I not been crazy, but it was so much worse than I could have imagined. I was shocked, but not heartbroken. Heartbreak had already flattened my self-esteem that past year."
Buhle’s memoir comes as investigators for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware are probing Biden for possible tax fraud stemming from his overseas business dealings. Investigators have recently requested bank records dating back to 2014, when the pair were still married.
Buhle and Biden met in 1992 while they were working for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and got married in 1993. The couple shares three daughters—Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy.
