President Donald Trump has canceled his weekend trip to Poland to handle the emergency relating to Hurricane Dorian. In his place, Vice President Mike Pence will travel to Poland.

Trump told reporters at the White House that the trip’s cancellation was to ensure that “all resources of the federal government are focused on the arriving storm”

“It's something very important for me to be here. This storm looks like it could be a very, very big one indeed,” Trump added.

Trump was supposed to join a Polish event related to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II. The U.S president said he spoke with Polish President Andrzej Duda and offered his warmest wishes.

The Trump news of dropping the travel to Poland came during a White House Rose Garden event on the U.S. Space Command.

Labor Day landfall of Dorian in Florida

Hurricane Dorian's landfall in Florida is expected as a Category 4 storm on Labor Day.

According to experts, the range of potential landfall spots is going to be vast -- from the Florida Keys to southeast Georgia.

In the early forecasts, Dorian was projected to hit the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico where residents are still recovering from the devastating Hurricane Maria of 2017 that killed 3,000 people.

But Dorian spared the island largely and lashed the British and Virgin Islands instead.

According to Florida news updates, Dorian would be the first Category 4 hurricane to hit Florida's east coast since 1992.

The Hurricane Center urged residents of Florida to have their hurricane plan in place and follow the advice of local emergency officials.

Noting that it is too early to tell exactly where the storm would make landfall, the Hurricane Center warned of life-threatening storm surge along Florida's east coast during the weekend or early next week.

The center said regardless of the storm’s track in the Hurricane season, heavy rains are expected in parts of the Bahamas and Florida over the weekend.

Emergency expanded to more counties

Meanwhile, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in 12 counties on Thursday while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis extended the emergency to 67 counties.

Florida’s Emergency Director Jared Moskowitz noted that some forecast tracks indicated Dorian could push into the Gulf of Mexico, trapping it along the Panhandle. It will be “the worst-case scenario,” he added.

Reports said the entire Atlantic coast of Florida was on alert Thursday, with residents from Miami to Jacksonville buying stuff from grocery stores and crowding sandbag-filling stations.

One resident, Elizabeth Eradiri told New York Times that “It looks like Thanksgiving. It didn’t look like this yesterday. They’re buying everything you can think of — but mostly water.”
