A 23-year-old woman from India's Rajasthan state claimed that she had been raped on separate occasions by different men over the weekend in the presence of her husband and that she had been tortured after her family could not satisfy her husband's dowry demands.
The woman from the city of Dholpur alleged that an unidentified man, who was brought by her unnamed husband, had raped and beaten her up Saturday, newspaper The Times of India reported. She was allegedly raped again the following day by another man her husband had also brought.
"The woman had got (sic) married to her husband about five months ago. She alleged that her husband and his family members kept pressuring her for dowry, and he later sent other men to rape her," deputy superintendent Parvendra Singh said.
The woman had told police that her husband and the alleged rapists had also tortured her by placing chili in her private parts, as per The Times of India. She was rescued by her parents after they were informed of the alleged abuse.
A first information report was registered against the husband and the men under Section 371D (gang-rape) of the Indian Penal Code at the Baseri Police Station after a medical examination was conducted on the woman, police said.
"The husband and his family members fled when they learned that the woman had gone to file the case against them," an official was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
According to the official, the woman's in-laws had been taunting and attacking her over her dowry.
"When her family could not pay more, the accused allegedly sent men to rape her," the official added.
Upon being rescued, the woman was found petrified and in pain due to the alleged rape and torture.
"The family was shocked at the way in which their daughter was treated by her husband," the official said.
Police said they are making efforts to arrest the accused. The investigation has been handed over from Dholpur police to a deputy superintendent rank official.
