Former IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander explains how he could beat Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Throughout his illustrious pro boxing career, Mayweather has never tasted defeat. Many have been trying to put an end to his flawless record and some even claim that they have the blueprint on how to finally stop him, including Alexander.
In a recent video call interview with Elie Sechback of EsNews, Alexander recalled some of the best fights of his career including his win over Marcos Maidana.
But when asked about how we would fare against Mayweather, the Missouri native was quick to respond and said he could take out the undefeated boxer.
“I’d beat Floyd [Mayweather],” Alexander replied. “I’m just as smart as Floyd. The thing is, I know a lot of people got opinions on how to beat Floyd and in my personal opinion, they let Floyd dictate the fight."
Apart from claiming he knows how to beat Mayweather, Alexander went on to emphasize that “Money” is good at making his opponents “fight his game,” something Saul “Canelo” Alvarez almost managed to overcome.
“The person who dictates the fight, wins the fight, in every (kind of) fight,” the 33-year-old pointed out. “Floyd is good at that. He’s good at getting people fight his game. Canelo did a good job against Floyd. That’s kind of close.”
Mayweather vs. Alvarez happened in 2013. At the time, the Mexican pugilist was also undefeated as a super welterweight, but the American veteran made him miss a lot of power punches and took him to a boxing clinic instead.
After the fight, it has become clear that Alvarez was still far from Mayweather’s level as a fighter. But the latter still lauded his then-unbeaten opponent.
"Canelo does everything well, he goes for the body good, he's got a good jab, he's a good combo puncher,” Mayweather said of Alvarez after the fight in 2013. “He's not 42-0 for nothing. Well, now 42-1 but in my eyes, he's still a champion."
Over time, Alvarez improved and has officially become a multi-division champ. The Mexican superstar has moved up several weight classes since the devastating defeat.
However, Alvarez recently insisted that should a rematch between him and Mayweather happen, the outcome will be different.
“It’s different now,” Alvarez said in November last year. “I’m a different fighter. I think he’s good too, but I’m a different fighter now.”
