'If I Don't Stay, Nobody Will Remember What MLS Is,' LAFC Knocks Out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's LA Galaxy
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's LA Galaxy were knocked out from play-offs of Major League Soccer (MLS) by Los Angeles Fc (LAFC) on Friday and the match could have been the Swede's final MLS game.
It was for the first time in MLS history, LAFA got the better of its crosstown rivals, who are five-time MLS champions. It was also LAFC's best regular season in MLS history in its just second year of existence in the league. They have also reached the league records for points, goals and goal differential.
LAFC's star striker Carlos Vela netted two goals in the first half and his side ensured they were 2-0 up when they went for the half-time break. Ex-Arsenal forward Vela's brace helped him take his season's tally for LAFC to 36.
Soon after the second half went underway, LA Galaxy fought back but Adama Diomande's late double secured LA FC's historic victory and the side progressed to the MLS Western Conference final. They will face Seattle Sounders in the final on Tuesday at Banc of California Stadium. The winner will then play against Toronto FC or Atlanta United for the MLS Cup on Nov. 10.
The 38-year-old Ibrahimovic, who also scored in his side's 5-3 loss to LAFC, is expected to not get his contract renewed, which is due to expire this December.
"They said something. [I'm] not being disrespectful, but this is like training for me. The stadium is too small for me. This is a walk in the park," Ibrahimovic said as he left the field after fans taunted him.
"If I stay it will be good for MLS because the whole world will watch it. If I don't stay, nobody will remember what MLS is," Ibrahimovic, who is linked with a return to Europe, said after LA Galaxy's MLS semi-final loss Friday.
