After reaching an agreement to pay $46 million to a California family, whose child was crushed to death by a dresser, Swedish retailer IKEA has recalled 970,000 chests for a possible tip-over risk that could trap children, causing death or serious injuries to them. IKEA has received six reports of tip-over incidents from the chests that were not anchored to the wall, which included reports of minor cuts and bruises.

The recall affects IKEA’s Kullen three-drawer chests, which should be anchored to the wall to avoid the tip-over hazard. The chest of drawers is 28-3/8 inches tall and was sold in black-brown or birch colors. It weighs approximately 45 pounds.

The recalled chests were sold exclusively at IKEA stores nationwide and on IKEA’s website from April 2005 to December 2019 for about $60. Images of the recalled chest can be viewed here.

The affected chest of drawers has an article number of 600-930-58 for the birch model and 501-637-54 for the black-brown model. The chest also has a five-digit supplier number, four-digit date stamp, IKEA logo, country of origin, and “KULLEN” printed on the underside of the top panel or inside the side panel.

Customers that have purchased the recalled Kullen chests are urged to stop using it immediately if it is not properly anchored to the wall. IKEA also said the chest should be placed in an area where children cannot access it.

To repair the issue, IKEA is offering a refund or repair kit. Consumers should contact IKEA for a full refund or a free wall-attachment anchor kit. IKEA can be contacted at 1-888-966-4532 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET or by going online to www.IKEA-USA.com/secureit for more information.

To receive a refund, customers can return the chest to an IKEA store or arrange for free pickup of the chest. To receive the wall-attachment anchor kit, consumers can order the kit from IKEA and install it themselves or have IKEA install it for them as a one-time, free in-home installation service, upon request.
