Ilhan Omar’s Tweet On Gaza Violence Sparks Criticism From Conservatives
Freshman representative Ilhan Omar sparked criticism over her tweet on Gaza violence on Sunday. She lamented over the violence in Gaza through her tweet but prominent Republicans slammed her with allegations of anti -Semitism.
She was criticized by Conservatives over her tweet. Many of them commented that Omar’s response to the issue suggests that she was voicing her support for Hamas, a Palestinian Sunni-Islamist fundamentalist organization. Hamas was reportedly responsible for hundreds of rockets fired over the weekend.
“How many more protesters must be shot, rockets must be fired, and little kids must be killed until the endless cycle of violence ends?” Omar tweeted. “The status quo of occupation and humanitarian crisis in Gaza is unsustainable. Only real justice can bring about security and lasting peace.”
Representative Liz Cheney one of the prominent Republican in the house tweeted that Omar is defending Hamas. She tweeted “Real question is how many times will @IlhanMN rush to the defense of terrorists?”.
Donald Trump Jr. also tweeted, accusing the Democratic leaders and Presidential candidates of “endorsing this insanity” by not rebuking the congresswoman. He called her tweet “deeply troubling.”
Former U.S Ambassador to United Nations Nikki Haley said that she agreed with Omar’s statement and asked what should be done about Hamas. Haley's tweet might actually indicate that the congresswoman was referring to Hamas rockets and not Israeli rockets, reported The Hill.
Omar had recently made another controversial remark, alleging that support for Israel in Congress was purchased by Jewish-backed advocacy groups last February.
Being the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, Omar and Representative Rashida Tlaib have been subject to severe criticisms on their views regarding Israel and Pro- Israel American groups. Their response on the Gaza issue came after Imam Mohamad Tawhidi slammed both Omar and Tlaib for not condemning Hamas terrorism. Tlaib who responded before Omar also received criticisms over her tweet.
Palestine and Israel reached ceasefire on Monday after 25 Palestinians, including 10 militants and four Israeli civilians were killed in the attack that escalated over the weekend, reported Fox News.
