An Illinois man was arrested for beating his 17-year-old daughter to death after forbidding her to attend school prom as he "did not trust her."
Mohammed Almaru, 42, is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his daughter, Mia Maro, who was found dead Sunday at the family's home in Tinley Park, Chicago Sun-Times reported, citing cops.
The teen had reportedly gotten permission from her father to attend her senior prom on April 29. She had also selected a dress to wear to the prom, WGN 9-TV reported. However, the day before the prom night, her father suddenly changed his mind stating he "did not trust her" and revoked permission for her to attend the event, the court documents stated, as per People.
Prior to the killing, Mia had reportedly texted her aunt, Randa Almaru that she was afraid her father was going to kill her. When police arrived at the residence, Mia's body was found in the basement of the house with multiple bruises on her arms, legs, feet, torso, skull and face. Mohammed was also found at the scene with self-inflicted wounds to his wrist and throat.
Officials said Mohammed had a box cutter near his right hand and he had blood on his pants, shirt and socks. He had also ingested pills in an alleged attempt to kill himself. Mohammed was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was stabilized Monday afternoon, WGN9-TV reported.
Mia's mother, Mohammed's wife, Audrey Jorgenson, also lived in the Tinley Park house. Jorgenson was rendered wheelchair-bound after suffering a traumatic brain injury in 2019. Mohammed's sisters, Linda Maro and Randa were the primary caretakers of Jorgenson.
A chain of events took place before Mia's murder. On April 26, Mia told Randa she had accidentally rear-ended someone while driving her father’s car and said he was going to "beat her ass." On April 29, Randa tried to track Mia to check if she had gone to the prom but noticed Mia had traveled to two different locations other than downtown Chicago where the prom was being held, WGN 9 reported, citing court records.
On April 30, Linda texted Mia, but got no response. The same evening, Mohammed allegedly texted one of his adult sons (who didn't live in the house) to know if he heard from Mia which he had not. Linda texted Mia again on Saturday morning but it went unresponded again. Then, at around 4:00 p.m. that day, Mohammed texted his son a picture of himself holding a letter.
In that letter, "Mohammed blamed his wife for making his daughter, Mia, think that he didn’t love her," Oxygen.com reported.
Mohammed accused Mia of hiding things from him. He even checked her phone for information and reportedly found evidence that she wasn't being truthful. "I lost my mind, went out of control, and beat the s*** out of her and [accidentally] hit her in the head," he texted his son, the outlet reported, citing court documents. "And then I laid down with her and was [unconscious] and woke up to her cold body."
When Randa and Linda arrived at the home, they found Mohammed "disheveled," WGN 9 reported. Mohammed asked the sisters to sit with his wife while he worked on paperwork. At some point, Randa heard gurgling noises coming from his bedroom. When she went inside the room, she found Mia lying dead on the floor covered by a blanket and her brother was lying down next to her with his arm around her body. She then informed the cops.
An autopsy revealed Mia died of extensive hemorrhaging in her brain. Officials had recovered a metal pole that was found in the kitchen with blood and hair on it, as well as a rubber mallet in the garage with the teen’s blood on it, according to CBS News.
Mia attended Andrew High School and was just days away from graduating. Mohammed is likely to face 20 to 60 years behind bars if convicted of first-degree murder. He is due to appear in court on May 9.
