The family of a 66-year-old Illinois woman who died of COVID has placed the blame for her death on those people that choose not to get vaccinated.

Candace Kay Ayers’ obituary reads, “She was vaccinated but was infected by others who chose not to be. The cost was her life.”

“Mom was a fighter...and mom was so angry at people for not getting vaccinated and not wearing a mask,” Ayers’ son Marc, 36, told Today. “Mom was very vocal about people who just refused to take those precautions and so we thought it was a good idea to put that in the obituary and make a statement out of it.”

Ayers, as well as her whole family, was vaccinated in the spring, which was a relief to her as she had a pre-existing condition, rheumatoid arthritis, and was already immunocompromised, Marc told Today.

Ayers, who died on Sept. 3 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, was diagnosed with COVID-19 on July 28 after traveling to Mississippi to visit an unvaccinated friend, according to Today.

Her obituary also said, “She was preceded in death by more than 4,531,799 other infected with COVID-19.”

Marc told Fox News, “We want to hold every segment of the population accountable and responsible for where we're at today.”

Ayers was born in Mobile, Alabama, and is survived by her husband Terry of nearly 43 years as well as her children Marc and Amanda and three grandchildren.

The Ayers family is not the first to blame the unvaccinated for the death of a loved one. In August, a family in Florida blamed those that did not receive their COVID shot for the death of their 84-year-old father.

In Clark Allen’s obituary, the family said, “He was infected by someone who chose to not get vaccinated and his death was preventable.”

Allen, who was vaccinated, died on July 22 from COVID-19.

In another instance, the wife of an Iowa man, Gary Keplinger, wrote in his obituary that her husband’s “life was unnecessarily cut short...because he was one of several victims recently infected from an unmasked, unvaccinated person...”

Gary was vaccinated and died from COVID on Aug. 11.
