Microsoft has some new plans for its virtual assistant, Cortana, for the upcoming Windows 10 update. The company is moving the assistant from just handling search options to a full-on virtual assistant like the ones from Amazon and Apple. This move is in line with Microsoft’s new focus for the Cortana app’s use its customers.

According to the official Microsoft site, the beta preview on Build 18945 has the improved version of Cortana. This Cortana build has improved speech and language models with a performance boost which allows it respond better and faster to its users. Instead of just taking written inquiries, Cortana can also take vocal commands to open up apps and search for the user for faster use.

More than its improved features, it’ll also have a minimalized notification pop-up. This feature allows Cortana to be less intrusive and not get in the way of the user’s activities. Sometimes, pop ups coming from assistant apps can be a minor annoyance as they can get in the way of clicks especially when doing precision-intensive work such as filling out tables and doing art.

Lastly, the new Cortana also supports light and dark modes. Much like other apps, light and dark mode support can control the general look of the app when appearing in your screen. Depending on the user’s preference, choosing either modes provides users with an option that best suits their eyes. At times, looking at bright white colors can look slightly hurtful for a bit.

As of now, Cortana is slowly being built up to be Microsoft’s own virtual assistant app much similar to Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Ciri. While Cortana does assist its users, it has fewer features which allow it to be as conversational with its user. This new update is expected to be live by early 2020.

Previously, Cortana was available on other Microsoft devices such as the Xbox One console. However, the company has been narrowing down its use for devices mostly used for business purposes. Potentially, Cortana can compete with the other virtual assistant apps once Microsoft improves this. As for its competition, many Apple apps and services will be improved by late 2019. Meanwhile, Amazon is currently building up its smart home device system which allows Alexa to help out regardless of the user’s location in their own home.
