Inauguration Day was packed with events, ceremonies, protestors and onlookers as the 58th ceremony took place in Washington, D.C. As the day progressed, photographers were able to capture the first moments of history.

In the wee hours of the morning, the sun rose on a colorful dawn while the country awaited the transition of power from former President Barack Obama to incoming President Donald Trump.

Several protests took place throughout the day and throughout the country in opposition of Trump's inauguration.

While former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush, were admitted into an intensive care unit in Texas and could not attend the ceremony, their son, former President George W. Bush, and his wife, Laura Bush, were in attendance.

Prior to the ceremony, Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, met with the new first couple for tea during Obama's last few hours in office.

A handful of high-profile figures denied the invitation to attend the ceremony, but not former President Bill Clinton and former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Despite her loss in the election, both were in attendance, where Hillary tweeted: "I'm here today to honor our democracy & its enduring values. I will never stop believing in our country & its future."

Large crowds of spectators gathered throughout the area for the ceremony. Inauguration Day is considered a federal holiday for Washington, D.C. federal employees. These workers are granted a day off, due largely in part to the amount of traffic and congestion that occurs during the day.

Vice President Mike Pence was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Pence used former President Ronald Reagan’s Family Bible during his oath, the only other person to use the bible during an inauguration.

Immediately following the vice president, Trump was sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts as the 45th president of the U.S. A congressional inaugural committee luncheon was scheduled succeeding the oath swearing ceremony with gala celebrations later Friday evening.
