'Independence Day 2': Chin Han Joins Cast As Leader Of Chinese Space Squadron
Chin Han has joined the cast of “Independence Day 2.” Director Roland Emmerich confirmed the involvement of the Singaporean actor via a Twitter post in which he can be seen giving a victory sign and posing with Han.
Han will be seen as the leader of a Chinese space squadron, reported Variety. The actor is known for his roles in “Marco Polo” and “The Dark Knight” and has previously worked with Emmerich in “2012.” Han was also seen in the Marvel film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier" as Councilmen Yen.
Han joins the ensemble cast including Maika Monroe, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Vivica Fox, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Production of “Independence Day 2” is underway in Mexico. It is the sequel to the 1996 film “Independence Day,” which starred Will Smith. The sequel is set 15 years after the events of the original film and will feature Hemsworth as Jake Morrison. Usher will play the son of Will Smith's character, Capt. Steven Hiller.
Usher reportedly landed the role after producer Harald Kloser noticed him working out in a gym. “My producing partner Kloser noticed Jessie in between sets of pushups at the gym and gave him an audition. As they say, the rest is history,” Emmerich revealed in a Facebook post.
Meanwhile, DeObia Oparei, who has been cast as Dikembe, is enthusiastic about the film. “It's got a whole new great energy about it. Yes, it's a sequel, but it's also a standalone different movie. Roland is just really good at picking his actors. I can't speak about the first 'Independence Day' because I'm obviously not in it, but this one, just the people in it -- Jeff Goldblum is even more amazing. Liam Hemsworth is a real exciting actor and just a great casting choice for this,” he told Zap2It.
Carter Blanchard, Emmerich and Dean Devlin have written the screenplay and Markus Forderer is doing the cinematography. The film opens June 24, 2016.
