India Reports Record Number Of Coronavirus Cases: Hits 43,000 In Single Day
India on Monday reported a record number of coronavirus cases, reaching over 40,000 in a 24-hour period. This is the largest number of cases in a single day for a country, behind the 60,000 U.S. cases that have been reported almost daily in July.
India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that 43,425 new cases of the virus were confirmed in addition to 681 new deaths, CNN reported.
In total, India, which has a population of 1.3 billion people, has over 1.1 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus and over 27,000 COVID-19 deaths reported as of early Monday afternoon, according to John Hopkins University.
While India is behind the U.S. in total coronavirus cases, it has tested 14 million people for the virus.
Indian health officials also said that the majority of cases were reported in the two states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, India.
“We are at the top but not at the peak," an Indian health official said. "We are certainly not at the bottom on the curve. Now, it is largely dependent on the community. No agency can help much in the outbreak now.”
India follows behind the U.S. and Brazil in the number of people infected with the coronavirus. The U.S. and Brazil have over 3.7 million and 2 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus, respectively.
