Indiana Man Stabs, Critically Injures 10-Year-Old Son, Shoots At Responding Officers

A 10-year-old boy was in "grave condition" after he was allegedly stabbed by his father in Wabash, Indiana, Thursday morning. According to local media reports, the incident occurred after a domestic dispute.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum told Fort Wayne's NBC police received a call about a dispute in East Maple Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim and were told the man was outside the home with a gun.

The man fired a shotgun at the officers when they tried to approach him. In return, the officers fired shots at the man.

Police said Sgt. Nick Brubaker of the Wabash police department was shot in his leg. He was taken to a local hospital where he received treatment for his non-life-threatening injuries.

The father, who has been identified as 32-year-old William Sendelbach, was shot at multiple times and was later flown to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition.

"A tragic incident occurred this morning involving several people including officers from our department. Our officer is recovering from a gun shot wound. We wish to thank the citizens of Wabash for their support. The investigation is being conducted by the Indiana State Police and all questions need to be directed to their agency," the police department wrote in a statement on Facebook.

The incident occured following a dispute between Sendelbach and his wife. The man stabbed his son causing serious injuries, police said, adding the mother was not hurt.

The boy who was in a “grave condition” was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. There were other children present at the home at the time of the incident. However, police said they did not see anything and were in the custody of the Department of Child Services.

It remains unclear as of early Friday if the victim and his father will survive the incident.
