A 23-year-old father in Mobile County, Alabama, has been arrested after allegedly pouring boiling hot water down his 1-year-old daughter's throat, according to authorities.
Eugene Lamont Sneed was out on bond for a 2020 domestic violence charge on Oct. 2 when he allegedly abused his infant daughter with boiling hot water and left her with severe burns, Fox 17 reported.
The child's mother, Niktoria Lett, told Fox 10 that her daughter Royalty was left alone with the child's father, Sneed, at her apartment that day. The mother said she left the house to go to an event.
When she returned to the apartment, Lett said she found her daughter's face "messed up" and couldn't recognize her.
"I couldn't even stand to look at her. I couldn't even keep calm. I couldn't even maintain my body for real, for real. So we rushed her to the hospital and from there, her injuries just started worsening," the mother said.
Lett said her 1-year-old is currently fighting for her life at USA's Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile, Alabama.
"19% of her head is burnt up, like all this is gone," the mother told the outlet. "And my baby [is] just in the hospital fighting for her life."
Lett said she's angry and wants the person responsible for hurting her child to be sentenced to prison.
"Her lungs [are] critical, everything [is] critical. That's how they know it was done purposely," Lett said. "They said it was an intentional thing that he did. Justice for Royalty! That's all we want, that's all we want."
Court documents cited by Fox 10 said the child suffered internal injuries and multiple burns to the face as a result of Sneed's alleged actions.
The Mobile County District Attorney's Office filed a motion Thursday afternoon asking a judge to revoke Sneed's bond.
Sneed was scheduled to go on trial later this month on a domestic violence charge, which stemmed from a 2020 incident where prosecutors alleged he shot at his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his children while the children were also in the house, NBC 15 reported.
Sneed was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail Thursday on a charge of aggravated child abuse, jail records cited by Fox 10 showed.
A judge denied bond in the case Friday. Sneed's arraignment is set for Oct. 17.
Sneed has had previous run-ins with the law. In September 2018, he was charged with third-degree domestic violence. Two years later, he was once again charged, this time with first-degree domestic violence. He faced another domestic violence charge a year later, ABC 7 reported.
Mobile Public Safety Director Lawrence Battiste told an NBC 15 reporter last week that Alabama needs Aniah's Law, which would allow judges to deny people accused of violent crimes bond and prevent them from getting back on the streets. It will be on the ballot in November.
